About

Congregation Shema Yisrael is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It began in 1986. That year Rabbi Loren Jacobs and his wife Martha moved to Michigan to proclaim the Good News to Jewish people in metro Detroit. Rabbi Loren remains its senior rabbi. The community describes itself as Messianic Jews and "kosher-hearted Christians."

Shabbat services are held every Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and a Bible study meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Both can be joined in person or by livestream. The rabbis also post weekly Torah parasha commentaries, Bible studies and messages.

The congregation holds that God's calling for Israel is irrevocable, and it rejects replacement theology. Jewish believers in Yeshua remain Jewish, while Gentiles who follow him are "grafted in" and united to the faithful remnant of Israel. It affirms the Trinity and teaches that Yeshua is fully God and fully man. Salvation, it believes, comes by grace alone through faith alone. Shema Yisrael is premillennial and dispensational. It holds that the Gospel should go to the Jewish people first, and evangelism stands at the core of its mission. Rabbi Loren calls himself pro-Torah and teaches that the Torah continues to guide the lives of the Jewish people. He also holds that the covenant made at Sinai is a broken covenant.
