Son of David Congregation

Messianic congregation · Derwood, MD

About

Son of David Congregation is a Messianic congregation in Montgomery County, Maryland, serving the Greater DC area from Derwood. Established in October 1995, it gathers every Shabbat at 10:30 in the morning. Jewish and Gentile followers of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob make up the community. An elder board leads it.

Worship draws on Jewish tradition. Songs and liturgy come in Hebrew and English, transliterated so visitors can join in, including the Sh'ma. During the Torah service a century-old scroll is carried in procession and a portion is read in Hebrew and English. A related passage from the brit chadasha follows. The pairing acknowledges "the Torah as the foundation of our faith and practice." Each Shabbat the children gather under a large tallit to be prayed for. Davidic praise dance is part of worship, with workshops for beginners.

The congregation exists to proclaim Messiah Yeshua to the Jewish people and beyond. It holds that Messianic congregations show God's faithfulness in sustaining the Jewish Remnant. Jewish tradition is valued where it agrees with Scripture, and Scripture prevails when the two conflict. Shabbat school serves children ages 3 to 12, and nursery care is provided for younger ones. The community aims to build small groups called havurot, and it has men's and women's ministries and a drama program. An oneg shabbat with bagels follows the service in the fellowship hall.
