Beit Israel is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. It began in 2002 in Escatawpa, Mississippi, and moved to the Mobile area after Hurricane Katrina. In 2011 the congregation settled in its permanent location in Bayou La Batre. Rabbi Paul Collins has led Beit Israel since its inception, with his wife, Rebbetzin Sally. It is a member of the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues and is associated with the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America.
Jews and Gentiles worship together here. The community holds that Yeshua is the promised Mashiach of Israel, and that believers are transformed by the power of the Ruach HaKodesh. Both the Tanakh and the Brit Chadashah are central to its services and its common life. Beit Israel describes itself as dedicated to bringing the Message of Messiah to the Jewish people and to the Nations.
Shabbat services begin Saturday at 11:00 and usually run between an hour and a half and two hours. Traditional Jewish liturgy in Hebrew and English sits beside modern Messianic worship, a full Torah service and the rabbi's message. Some worshippers join in Davidic dance during praise. Children stay with their families during the service, and a nursery is available with a parent present. Before the service, Rabbi Paul holds an "Ask the Rabbi" session. Afterward comes Oneg Shabbat, a covered-dish meal shared each week. A Bible study meets Tuesday evenings at 7:00.
