Beth Messiah Congregation MD

Messianic Jewish congregation · Germantown, MD

About

Beth Messiah is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in Germantown, Maryland, that gathers for a Shabbat service at 11 on Saturday mornings. The community describes itself as "an emerging synagogue with a rich heritage within the Messianic Jewish movement." It seeks to be a spiritual home for Jewish believers in Yeshua, for intermarried families and for those raising Messianic Jewish children.

Its story began in 1973, when a small group established one of the nation's earliest congregations of Jewish believers in Yeshua. Three years later, Beth Messiah became the first independent Messianic congregation in the United States to own its own building. In 1979 it was a founding member of the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations. It affirms the UMJC Statement of Faith and its statement on Defining Messianic Judaism. The congregation understands Jewish life and identity as "rooted in Torah, expressed in tradition, and renewed in Messiah."

Rabbi Ben Weisman is the spiritual leader. He received UMJC s'micha in 2026 and was raised as a Messianic Jew in Southern California. Saturday worship follows the traditional Shabbat siddur, with music and prayers that reflect a central commitment to Messiah Yeshua. Readings come from the Torah, the Haftarah and the Besorah. Hebrew carries much of the liturgy, with transliteration and English translation always available. All men are encouraged to wear a kippa, and Jewish men a tallit.
