Messianic Jewish congregation · Columbus, OH
Beth Messiah Congregation is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in the Columbus, Ohio area, where Jewish and Gentile followers of Yeshua worship together. Shabbat begins Saturday at 9:00 with adult Bible study. The service follows at 10:30, with kiddush, a light lunch and Torah study at 12:30. Nursery and youth programs serve ages birth to 18.
Worship follows the traditional Shabbat service, including the Shema, the Amidah and a procession of the Torah scroll. The portion is read in Hebrew and then English. A Haftarah reading and a passage from the B'rit Chadasha follow. Children go on to Junior Congregation or Shabbat School, and on the last Shabbat of most months the youth lead the liturgy.
The congregation teaches that Jewish families are strengthened in their Jewish calling. Gentile families are strengthened in their own calling while sharing fully in the Jewish heritage of Messianic life. Beth Messiah calls itself "a community of Jews as Jews and Gentiles as Gentiles, one in Messiah." It supports service projects in the local Jewish community and in Israel.
The community began in June 1975 with Erev Shabbat services in an apartment near Ohio State University. Rabbi Howard R. Silverman has led the congregation since 1991. Its Messianic Studies Institute, founded in 1994, offers adult education. A Hebrew School and B'nei Mitzvah training at age 12 serve the children.
