Messianic Jewish congregation · Cary, NC
Congregation Sha'arei Shalom is a Messianic Jewish synagogue in Cary, North Carolina, and a member of the UMJC. Its name means "Gates of Peace." The congregation calls itself "a community of devoted Jews, together with our families, friends, and allies." Together they follow Yeshua the Messiah while living out contemporary Jewish life.
Shabbat services meet Saturdays at 10am, in person and by livestream. Rabbi Jeff Lerman, prayer leaders and a musical ensemble lead worship. The service keeps the traditional shape of the Shabbat morning service, with the Shema, the Amidah and a Torah processional. Readings come from the Torah, the Haftarah and the Apostolic Writings, followed by a drash and the Mourner's Kaddish. Prayers and songs are in Hebrew and English. Israeli-style folk dance is part of worship. A light oneg follows.
The community understands Messianic Judaism as a movement of Jewish congregations committed to Yeshua and to Jewish life rooted in Torah. That life is expressed in tradition and renewed in the New Covenant. Seven pillars shape community life, among them Torah study, worship, sharing good news and standing with the people of Israel. On Shabbat, a nursery serves children up to age 3. During the academic year, children ages 4 to 11 are dismissed partway through the service for Jr. Shabbat. Twice a year the congregation holds a Mitzvah Day to care for its facilities and grounds.
