Messianic Jewish congregation · Clarksville, MD
Emmanuel Messianic Jewish Congregation gathers in Clarksville, Maryland, for Shabbat services every Saturday from 10 am to noon. Each week's service is also livestreamed. Founded in 1915, the congregation describes itself as the oldest extant Messianic congregation in the world. Its own short self-description is "Traditional, yet modern."
Jews and non-Jews worship together here. The congregation holds that both are one in the Messiah. It believes Yeshua is the true Messiah promised to the Jewish people, the one of whom Moses and the prophets spoke. Worship services draw on Jewish tradition and practice, and members respect and revere the Torah. Gentile believers are understood as grafted in to the heritage of Israel. The good news, they teach, is for everyone, "to the Jew especially, but equally to the Gentile."
Rabbi Baruch (Barry) Rubin has served as the congregation's rabbi for more than 45 years. Rebbetzin Lisa Rubin teaches Israeli and Messianic dance and supports the development of a Sisterhood. The community holds services for Rosh Hashanah, Passover and Yom Kippur, along with bar and bat mitzvahs and weddings. A Shabbat School teaches children, and interfaith families are welcomed. Emmanuel also teaches Christians about the Jewish origins of their faith.
