Messianic Jewish congregation · Skokie, IL
Devar Emet Messianic Synagogue is a Messianic Jewish congregation led by Rabbi Kirk Gliebe. It aims to grow a Jewish community that believes and teaches that Yeshua is the promised Jewish Messiah. Shabbat morning services begin at 10 AM. They draw on traditional Jewish liturgy, Scripture reading, extemporaneous prayer, contemporary songs and New Testament readings. Following Jewish tradition, the congregation understands the service as an ascent up Mt Sinai to receive G-d's Torah. The liturgy moves from the Tehillim through the Shema to the Amidah. An Oneg Shabbat follows, and nursery and childcare are offered for young children.
On Wednesday nights the community gathers for corporate prayer, reflective singing, personal testimony and in-depth Scripture study. Devar Emet has adopted the Statement of Faith of the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations as its own. It holds that G-d's covenant with Israel is everlasting and that Israel's election is irrevocable. Torah is understood as G-d's gift to Israel and the constitution of the Jewish people. For communities from the nations, it teaches, Torah has a different role.
Gentile believers are grafted into the olive tree, yet do not become Jews. The synagogue is open to all people. Its membership and leadership are meant to remain predominantly Jewish. Gentiles who feel called to cast their lot with the Jewish people are asked to learn Jewish history, culture and tradition. Intermarried families are welcomed to grow in their faith in Messiah Yeshua and in Jewish life.
